According to modern pain research, pain is created by the brain as a warning signal in response to perceived danger or threat. Which means the only way to address it long term is to find and address the underlying reason's your brain is trying to protect you.

Why Treatments Often Don't Work Long Term

When you go to see a manual therapist they are generally looking for some kind of biomechanical or structural issue to find the cause of your pain.

This is why you can get multiple different opinions on the cause of your pain from each practitioner you go to see.

It also misses out on a lot of the potential underlying causes of pain, which is why so many people either fail to respond to treatment, or get temporary relief and then the pain comes back.

The easiest example to use is massage therapy. If you have back pain, a therapist would normally look for muscle tightness in the muscles in your lower back and hips.

By massaging the muscles, your back often feels better. But then the next day or a few days later, your neck tightens up again and the pain comes back.

This is because your tight muscles aren’t the cause of your pain. They're also just a warning signal created by your brain (just like pain).

Massage is treating the symptom (tight muscles) not the cause.

The real questions that needs to be asked is, 'what is causing your muscles to be tight?'

This is why you need to look at things from a neurological perspective. Because there are multiple different things that could cause your brain to want to protect you by creating tightness and pain.

This is why we use a comprehensive biomechanical and neurological assessment including proprioception, vision, vestibular, breathing, fuel supply, peripheral and cranial nerve testing.

Based on this comprehensive assessment, we create a very targeted rehabilitation program for you to work on.

If you work at things we expect to see significant improvements quickly. So our aim is get you out of pain within the first few sessions. Or at least to get you a reduction in pain during that time.

In long standing chronic pain situations, full resolution can take longer and can require substantial work on your part.
